obiterator, 2009
Digital installation that employs a screenscraper to cull obituaries from the New York Times website. When initially run, obiterator displays the day's obituaries in large, legible type. As time progresses and more and more obituaries are added, the display is scaled back to accomodate them, until the viewer is ultimately faced with an indecipherable wall of pixels.
Intended as a reflection on our society's relationship with death and the effects, both detrimental and beneficial, of instantaneous media access.
timelapse video to follow.
